Detention Division
Captain Randall Pittman, Division Commander

The Platte County Detention Division has a proud history. From its origin in 1841, when the first jail was purchased for $3,000 and constructed of "a substantial log structure" to our current facility shown above.

The first jail burned down in 1861 and was not replaced until 1867. The first recorded escape attempt was on March 16, 1858. In October of 1858 iron cells were introduced. The first successful jail escape occurred in the newly erected jail in June of 1867. This jail was replaced on February 10, 1910 and used until April of 1979. The jail was moved to the County Courthouse during a historic restoration of that building in 1978. In August of 1998, the new Tom Thomas Law Enforcement Center was completed.

The Division currently houses individuals arrested for a violation of law or sentenced to a jail term by the Platte County Circuit Courts. In addition, Platte County may house other individuals meeting the same criteria for other jurisdictions outside of Platte County. The Detention Division houses both males and females 17 years of age or older.
