A hands on learning experience designed to give you, the citizen, a better understanding of the role and function the Platte County Sheriff’s Office plays in our community.

The Sheriff’s Citizen Academy, or SCA, initiated by Sheriff Mark Owen, is a free nine week course that gives citizens an in-depth look into the career of law enforcement professionals at the Sheriff’s Office. Citizens will be instructed by deputies on the subjects of Administration, Investigation, Patrol, Emergency Services, and Detention.

Courses are held on Wednesday nights from 6:30 P.M. until approximately 9:30 P.M. Each week a new topic will be introduced and discussed. Accepted applicants will have the opportunity to ride along with a patrol deputy as well as work with detention officers and communications officers.

Participants must be at least 18 years old, have no felonies or serious misdemeanor convictions, and must be a resident or business owner in Platte County.

Each Sheriff’s Citizens’ Academy is limited to 20 persons.

The Sheriff has announced that the fall 2021 class will start on September 15th, 2021. Click here to download the application. Once downloaded, fill it out and return it by mail, fax, or in person. Deadline for all applications will be August 31st, 2021.
